Iiii have hand fatigue. Well, you know what I mean. Where your hands/wrists/arms just feel like dead, limp, exhausted weight and not really coordinated?
I have a lot to do today. I need to finish my weekly, go on a comment spree at PE, go on a thank you spree and a comment spree at dA, finish filling out an application, destroy the universe...
Lotsa stuff. o_o
But crap, why are my hands so blehhhhhhhhhh? STOP THAT, BODY. YOU SUCK.

This is the project that caused so much woe the past four or five days, with the whole Photoshop fiasco and all that? Yeah. I've been coloring for like...three days straight. My eyes are killing me.
This was for a PE exchange in which we pit one of our characters against one of the characters of the person we're assigned to. I was very excited about my assignment, because I get a kick out of Sarah's ( ladyofdragons ) girl Jorie. Naturally, it was pretty obvious who to put her up against too. My Dreor and she are so alike (and yet so not) in so many ways that they'd just have a BLAST pulping each other for the heck of it.
I tried to find a way to feature both girls' left sides, as that's the side with more interesting features for the pair of 'em.
A few factoids... The eyes: Jorie's left eye has "runic circuitry" because it is not her real eye, but a replacement of sci-fi/fantasy-esque variety, per her world. Dreor's eyes turn black (except for the gold ring at the edge of the iris) when she's using Shadows or just getting amped up and considering doing so, which is a trait of her race. The lip: In the last part/bottom, you'll notice Jorie's lip looks funny. Jorie has a layer of metallic skin under her outer human skin, and the ability to regenerate. Consequently, you get to see metal where she got hit hard enough to bust the skin open. The hair: Jorie is supposed to be blonde with some red-orange parts in the bangs. I suck and can't figure out how to color a blonde. Boooo. Yes, that is Dreor's natural hair color (her race can have streaks like that sometimes). The pants: ...obviously I need to figure out Jorie's pants a bit more. Crap. The hands: I only realized how monstrously huge I'd made Jorie's hands AFTER I'd fully colored them. I didn't really have time to go back and be obsessive about fixing them. THPPT. The tattoos: I need to fix Dreor's tattoos in the upper panel. I'll do it later. I'm exhausted now. lol The background: Iiiiis crap. Before the file corrupted a few days ago, I had two backgrounds. One was a totally trashed room, and that was the one I preferred, but it was taking way too long to color so I was going to use a second/simpler background for the post to prevent being even LATER, and then finish the trashed room background after that. Well, in the big file corruption, I lost both. I reconstructed my lineart for this project from a wip I'd taken quite some time before the corruption, and unfortunately in that wip the background had been turned down to a low opacity for some reason. Consequently, I now have a crap background for the time being. Everything looks like it's floating. Crap crap crap.
( Anyway, on to the pic... )
Well. Woo. Now you know why I've been referring to it as "The Massive." Funnier still, I intend to do the trashed room background after this, when I have time, so I can be truly happy with it before I post it to dA or whatever. lol

Tomorrow. Hoorah. Tomorrow I shall be finished. (Until later on, when I go back and be obsessive and do more work on it, hahaha.)

Well, I colored for...seventeen or eighteen hours straight today, if you ignore bathroom breaks, one get-a-glass-of-water break, and the occasional sit-back-and-stretch-hand-and-relax-your-damn-eyes moment. I have had a headache for like...six hours now.
I want a fucking Harry&David pear so bad right now, I'd fight a nun for it. She'd go down, oh yes indeed.
I'm maybe a couple hours of work away from the point I was at before the file corrupted. I was hoping to get to that point tonight before I got too tired to keep going, but my eyes are like...vibratingly sore and my hand is flirting with another fest of owshit. But I have to admit I would've kept going at least another hour.
Except that PHOTOSHOP FUCKING CRASHED.

EDIT: For some reason, making the angry face with the html thingies? Pisses LJ off, so it cut off the rest of my entry, which I only noticed when Teph started threatening helpless bitches. lol
Anyway, luckily I'd recently saved, so not much was lost, but enough that I was Severely Frustrated/Annoyed. I decided that was enough for the day, because I am feeling a bit nauseated from staring with-little-blinking at the screen for so long.

Well, I found my Creative Suite box and reinstalled CS. Unfortunately, that did nothing to save the files that had already gone down the crapper, but so far I haven't run into a repeat of the problem.
I noticed something though. The last file it did it to SHOULD have been approximately 100MB tops, yet it saved at 300MB. I have no idea what that means, but basically I suspect Photoshop may be fucked for the forseeable future. I've used this version happily for a long time, but I guess it's about done. I'll have to look into a way to get a fresh copy, since I have, um, no money at all to my name right now and even if I did it would be going toward more necessary things like...bills and getting out of a hellhouse.
I am being careful with what I have recovered thus far. I am trying to keep file size to a minimum. I don't know how successful that will be considering the sheer SIZE of the project. I am sending copies of the successfully saved file as I progress with it to Mel for safekeeping, in case it corrupts again.
I honestly have no idea what to think of this whole lunacy, but it has been very stressful and made me sick. lol
Thank you to all of you who've tried to help fix it (especially Davina, who endured a couple hours of file transfer in vain) or offered to. And Shawna, thank you for trying to calm me down and making me laugh so soon after I started to freak out.
Keep your fingers crossed for me, y'all?

My Photoshop problem appears to be a serious issue with the program itself now.
If I open ANY file in Photoshop, click "save" and then close it, then when I next attempt to open the file in Photoshop, it will fail with the error previously mentioned. If I do not click "save", then preexisting files are fine.
I'm now hunting hardcore for my Photoshop CDs.

Anyone have recommendations for free antivirus or internet security software? Or ones I should avoid? I just uninstalled Norton. Finally. Trying Avast! on the recommendation of Lee and Shawna. I like it so far. Very upfront and all about what it is and what it's doing, which is nice. And I like my control options of it. ...I'll be happy when I can restart again and make that annoying little spinning a stop spinning though. x_<
Also, I am having a serious issue with Photoshop, so any thoughts or help or light you can shed on it from your own knowledge banks would be appreciated...
Problem: I attempted to open a very large psd file (see: 500+ MB) in Photoshop. It's a very important project. I absolutely have to finish it, and I also feel like it is probably my favorite thing I've ever done. Photoshop began reading the file, then refused to open it, instead providing this error...

At first I thought this was just a Photoshop issue, which happens sometimes, and fixing it wouldn't be too hard. I was wrong, and the following is a list, in order, of attempted solutions. 1) Restart computer. FAIL. 2) Reset Photoshop preferences file, since this has fixed MANY problems for me in the past. FAIL. 3) Google the error message. I found several mentions of the issue, but all seem to relate to experiences with Photoshop on Mac OS/X, including the only mention of it I could find on Adobe's website support base. I run Windows XP. However, there was mention that there are many documented cases of Symantec's Norton 9 version corrupting psd files and this error occurring. No known cure. Suggested solutions: update Norton to latest patches, and if that doesn't work turn it off or uninstall it, but they still note "but an already corrupted file will remain corrupted and cannot be recovered or fixed". 4) Uninstalled Norton anyway, because it's crap and worthless and I'm sick of its dumb quirks and issues for other reasons besides. Have to restart after it's uninstalled, but still when trying to open the .psd? FAIL.
Which brings us to what's happening now...
5) I opened the .psd in Adobe's ImageReady instead, which is the program I typically only ever use if I'm animating things. It opened, if ungodly slowly, despite an error ImageReady claimed that it could not complete a process because of a "failed .assertion" whatever that is. This is taking a LOT of my computer's virtual memory, enough so that it had to page up some more. It was slowwwly showing the file, but I went ahead and said File>Save As... and saved it as a photoshop .psd under a new name. It's been saving for about fifteen minutes now, only 50% done saving so far... The name I used was "please work pleasepleasepleeeease.psd" if that tells you anything. Hopefully it will let me open it.
Regardless, does anyone have any thoughts on other methods of layer recovery for a .psd file that will not open? It's still there, I know it is. I can see it in the "preview" when I highlight it in the OPEN dialog, before I actually hit OPEN. I can also open all other .psd files without problem.
I have worked with files LARGER than 500 MB in Photoshop before, but some of the things I read when researching have implied that this happens mostly to very large files.
My Photoshop version is CS. No, not CS2 or CS3. The old old CS.
If this ImageReady resave method doesn't work, it's pretty much guaranteed that I will be hysterical. I will seriously...flip the far fuck out, I swear.
----------
UPDATE: Well, after nearly two hours of battling, I'm about to face the fact that I can't get the file open. ImageReady flipped out and the "please work" file self-destructed and no longer exists. An additional attempt to use the basic method of copying the file by right-clicking and then pasting it into a new folder, renaming, and attempting to open that, also failed.
I was going to attempt to get support via Adobe's support portal, but I last registered my product nearly six years ago, and I don't have the same email, nor do I even REMEMBER that email, and it won't let me re-register with my existing serial number. I can't have the serial number re-issued because the version of the product that I'm using is no longer in use.
Teph suggested trying to send the file to someone with a fast internet connection who has Photoshop, to see if THEY can open it and resave it as a different file FOR me. However, I'm not sure any of you would be willing to endure the lengthy process of sending a near-600 MB file, opening it, resaving it, and then sending it to me again. If it even opened at all. Furthermore, I'd ask that you virus-scan it, just in case, since I don't know wtf is going on and I'd hate to infect your computer if something were embedded in the file.
Right now, I'm just sitting here crying, because I seriously worked on that for almost two months, and today it was going to be finished, and I was excited and happy, and it's already a couple days late, and I had like...I don't know, 90 layers of work in there? And it was fantastic, and I liked it a lot, and I'm pretty sure the person it was for would have liked it a lot.
I feel like I'm going to throw up now.

So, an update on Ria and the staph infection fiasco.
A couple days after the initial scare, Ria got it into her head to go to the gym. She's a somewhat athletic girl (she could've gotten a scholarship in softball or lacrosse if she'd just pursued it a while, coaches all said so) and loves to exercise. Unfortunately, that seems to have been a really bad idea. She came home from the gym so exhausted that she slept (off and on) for nearly 24 hours.
The day after that, she seemed fine, if still a bit sluggish and wary of walking up and down the stairs. She was her usual bossy, dominating, somewhat bratty self.
Saturday night, Ria and Chloe had four of their friends over and they pitched one of our tents out on the patch of grass the street shares for a sleepover. They were noisy and squealy and active, as teenage girls tend to be, and the house didn't clear out of said chaotic infestation until sometime after noon on Sunday.
Ever since then, Ria's been sleeping off and on and tired and weak again. After some discussion, the rest of us agreed that if she doesn't get up and start behaving pretty normally tomorrow, we have to take her back to a doctor.
The plan was that Dad, and possibly Chloe and Mama, would move her out to her college in Montana in July to get her settled in her dorm before the semester begins. But we're wondering now if she may need to just stay home until late July.
-------------
In other news: 1) My mom is back from the family reunion in Bavaria, as of late late Saturday, and actually did something that surprised me. She brought me back a gift, which is kinda a very uncommon thing. My family tends to forget me on trips. But she did, and not only that, she brought me something I actually like. It's a little antler knife. It's hand-made, and a little bit off balance, but still very light and fun. If nothing else, it could be great for sharpening my charcoal pencils, which I don't like to use normal sharpeners on. It's rare, as I said, to get a gift, and even rarer that it's something I like since my family doesn't really...give a shit. lol So it was a nice surprise.
2) My hand is a bit puffy. I really really overdid it this time. It doesn't hurt now, except the occasional twinge if I clench my fist without thinking, but yeah...bit puffy. Kinda annoying, because I can't FEEL things I'm holding as well, but at least now I can work on things I need to work on.
3) My brother is a moron. I swear, if he makes me an aunt anytime soon, I'll have to avoid ever seeing him again or I might do something rash.
4) I was talking with Riss today. Riss is down in Texas, and I told her about the ranch. I miss it. I really really really miss it. It's been about a year and a half now since I was there and I'm really ready to go back. This may mean I'll head there during the week+ I get off for the Democratic Convention, if I can't keep some patience and wait for one of the family trips (which are stressful, but at least I get to go to the ranch and get my zen when they go into town and leave me).
5) Over all, I am very tired and ready for something to go right.

1) Woke up with chest/heart pains today. This runs in the family on my mother's side. I thankfully don't get them as bad or as often as my mother or sister. Mom has had to go to the ER a couple times. Nobody knows what causes it, but the current popular theory is we have a hereditary trait involving a muscle or such near the heart that is too "short" and thus can be stretched too easily, resulting in the constricting, sharp, awful pain. Most of them are gone now, but still getting a couple pangs here and there. Mostly just frustrating/annoying at this point.
2) Have been drawing for like...three days straight? I don't know. I'm all time-outta-whack since Ria got the staph infection. Anyway, I overdid it. My hand is acting up, old injuries come back to haunt me. Hurts like fucking hell, can't grip the pen very well at all now. Earlier it was so bad I could do nothing but lay my hand perfectly flat, and even that was a bit painful -- though less than other positions.
3) I finally gave up and took painkillers. They didn't help with the pain, nor did heat or anti-inflammatory treatments. But they have made me stupid-drowsy.
4) I hate feeling like I've let people I love and/or respect down. It's a horrible feeling.
5) I also hate that I can't help all my friends who are in financial or other types of duress right now. I love you guys, I wish I could help, regardless of problems that are money, family, or just generally life related.
6) I am so determined to finish what I'm working on right now, and yet the drugs are making it incredibly hard to keep my eyes open. Dammit.
7) Also, fighting off a crying fit. No idea where that's coming from, except maybe all of the above too close together.

A few that I check regularly:
The Phoenix Requiem -- Nice visual coherency and consistency, slow and steady build-up, slightly mystic not-steampunk victorianism with caribou and mystery! Made by one of the founders of Tomgeeks, Sarah Ellerton.
Fey Winds -- Made by Nicole, aka kitsunechan (for you PE'ers), aka another founding Tomgeek. Where team solidarity means that Nigel gets naked! 'Nuff said.
Earthsong -- This one's also from a Tomgeek founder, Crystal Yates. I'm not so sure yet how I feel about this one, I'm waiting for some more story to show its face, and then I'll pass judgment on how I feel about it. Right now it's kinda...slow and a bit too mellow for my tastes.
The Dreamer -- Lora is an American Revolution geek. Lora makes a dream-transportation comic about a 21st century girl who has been winding up in some very real historical events when she dreams. Been kinda interesting so far, and the really interesting part is that the 1776-era characters she uses are basically actual historical figures -- and thus we already know how they died. Which makes this kind of a "WELL THEN WHAT THE HECK IS GONNA HAPPEN?" situation in the WEIRDEST way.
The Zombie Hunters -- Okay, honestly, what part of this ISN'T totally win? We have graphic zombies of various TYPES, graphic language, graphic death, crazy-young-lunatics humor, action, plottydom, a developed world, a bear hat, a shovel-weapon, and a brick flail. Need I say more? Totally not for kids under 13. Totally. Hehehehe. (Also, the way she starts it out like a movie totally rocked.)
Multiplex -- I just like it, okay? Also, it helps that a couple of the characters TOTALLY remind me of a couple of mine/Tam's. Lots and lots of humor, but also people-have-lives-and-do-weird-crap plot, and also neat characters, and also lots of fun pranks, and also movies. Yes. So.
Allan -- A sixteen year old boy makes an autobiographical comic of his day to day life. Currently on Day 342. Frankly I just find this a neat concept, and am impressed that the kid has kept up with it as well as he has.
Lackadaisy -- Yup, that's right. Tracy Butler's gin-smuggling prohibition-era cat comic of deviantART fame. I mean come on. How can you not love this thing? (Someone compared me to Freckles. ...thppppt.) My favorite is Viktor. He's such a teddybear!
Least I Could Do -- Yes, as in "the least I could do is use a condom". Modern day casanova dude. Lots of sex-related jokes and sex-related plots and pranks and hilarity thereof, but also lots of other stuff too. I just like it. I'm not gonna explain myself. XP
Gone With the Blastwave -- Because war can be boring too. This comic is just fun. So there. It totally suits my sense of humor as well. It was first recommended to me AGES ago by someone who said that Strip #28, "Tank 3", was me. They're right. It so totally is. I would absolutely fucking LOVE TO DO THAT! ...hehehehehe, tank. Blastwave's maker has all but abandoned it. It still gets updates now and then, but it's seriously like...a few months in between strips. He appears to have lost interest after going on his mandatory military service early last year, probably because he was reintroduced to the World and to Life. Bah!
So, who on my friends list has a favorite webcomic they'd like to share with me?

So! I finally hunted down information about what the freaking high-falootin' HELL is going on with my campus this fall.
Basically, the nation's Democratic Convention is invading Denver on what would usually be our second week of classes. Since we're next door to the Convention Center, the DemCon is using our campus sometimes, and they're taking over the trains and traffic will be hell...the school decided the solution would be to have us all start two weeks early!
AAAAGH. Can we say chaos? We can. CHAOSCHAOSCHAOS.
So basically my fall is going to go a little something like this...
August 11th: Monday, start classes, eight school days (M,W,T,T x 2) before... August 21st: Thursday, last day of classes because... August 23-29: Campus closed for the Democratic Convention, which just leads right into... September 1: Labor Day holiday, campus closed again! September 2: Tuesday, go back to classes for twelve weeks of classes (minus that lost Monday) until... November 20th: Thursday the 20th is the last day of classes because... November 24-30: Fall/Thanksgiving break December 1: Monday the 1st, go back to classes for just four days and then... December 8-11: Monday through Thursday is my finals week, but I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up being just the 8th and 9th
...there's two things about this that are going to kill me. 1) Classes starting two weeks early followed by an 11 day break. That's going to screw me up, I can already tell, because of the discontinuity alone! 2) Finals the week after we get back from break? ...basically this translates to the fact that my fall break might as well not exist, because I'll be spending it studying and doing homework. And probably working. Because dammit, I need money.
Oh. God.
In other news, tomorrow I'm going to go check out the 24 hour FedExKinko's by the mall (yes, the one where I used to work at the evil little bookstore that is now DEAD), because it would be an ideal place to work in terms of saving on fuel, and I have a slim chance at getting a night shift. I'm also going to swing by the Life Time Fitness monstrosity on the hill near my house to see if there's any night shift opportunities, though I imagine the only things available would probably be reception or custodial, unless they for some bizarre reason keep their child care center open overnight (though I'd want to get my first aid certification renewed for that anyway). Also will try out the hotels on the hill. My sister worked as a hostess at the Trapper's restaurant (her manager was an Aussie!) on top of the Holiday Inn there until this summer; it was a great first job for her, but they wouldn't hire me because I can't wear dresses. lol I'll be looking at probably reception or custodial at the hotels as well, but hey, whatever.
If none of those pan out, I'll probably head for the Target, Safeway, and King Soopers at the bottom of the hill.
Anyone have any other ideas of where I might find a night or wee-AM-hours shift?

Today, Ria is much better. She's still very achey and can't move around very fast and doesn't enjoy the stairs at all, but she's much better.
